The Year of Reviews?

Well the year is about out. And I was looking over what I had done on my blog this year. Do you do that? See where you have been? Well I do see I have 358 post this year. And with 365 days in a year, I almost made a post a day. Not too bad.  I also broke over 100 followers which made me feel pretty amazing.  And over 1000 post over all.  So those where the numbers.

But I was also looking at what I have posted.  Yes, lots of reviews.  I will agree.  And I want to take this time to thank you for that.  Why you?  Well your here right.  That means you have read a lot of the reviews.  I am not sure your feeling on them.  I try very hard to put them in context of how they work in my life.  Keeping the flavor of my family in there the best I can.  But also, a massive thank you, they help me out more than you could ever know.  You see on my very limited budget that is my gifts.  Yes, my gifts to my family and friends.  I save almost everything I can from a review so I can have a nice new gift to give out.  Since I live on less than $1200 a month for income there is not much left over for gifts.  So I do 'pimp' myself out to help fill that gap.  And my thanks are to you for reading and following and staying with me.  I am sure it is not always the most entertaining here.  I will try and do better this year.

And in keeping with that thought.  I felt that may be you would like to see my 12 favorite post for this last year.  I picked one a month.  Through those 12 I think you would have a good feel for me, my family and our year all together.  What do you think?

 1.  January.  You Awake?
 2.  February.  Eeeek! It's Cold Out There!
 3.  March.  Weekend Fun
 4.  April.  Momma's Old
 5.  May.  Special for my Friends
 6.  June.  Busy Busy Busy
 7.  July.  Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes and Yes!

 9.  September.  God Blessed Us
10.  October.  June Cleaver Honored
11.  November.  McLinky Monday Question
12.  December.  He Should Have Known

My Christmas Beauty

This is my grandbabe TK.  She is a beauty.  I love her eyes, they are so much like her mother's eyes.  I wanted to show her off.  And I get to do this while I am also entering the “ 2010 Holiday Photo Contest” sponsored by GiveawayBlogs.com.  GiveawayBlogs.com is a ning site that was created by UPrinting.   The winner will receive a 18 X 24 museum wrapped canvas print and a $100 Amazon gift card.  Pretty good!  So I know how much I love the photo.  Maybe others will too.  You can always pop over there and vote for this photo too.  I do wish to thank my lovely step daughter and her man for taking this beautiful photo and sending it to me.  If I win I plan on sharing the prize with them.

Top 10 Tuesday (Things to Make for Dinner)

Top Ten {Tuesday}

Today I am joining the RHOK as they pop over to OhAmanda  for the Top Ten Tuesday.  This week is the top 10 things to make for dinner.  I love doing home cooking for my family so this is an easy peasy one for me.  I polled the family to see what that choose as their favorites.  And here is our list.

1.  Last night was a favorite and a quick easy meal.  We have waffle sandwiches.  Simple....waffle iron and a ham (or turkey or roast beef or...you get the idea) and cheese sandwich placed inside.  Close the hot iron and in just minutes you have a yummy grilled sandwich.  College Girl swears that it is the lil squares that make them so yummy.

2.  My all time quick and easy dinner is actually a breakfast thing.  And that is simple breakfast rice.  I know may not be that nutritious but we love it.  Cooked white rice drained.  Add in butter, sugar and cinnamon to taste.

3.  Another favorite here is Crock Pot Bar-B-Que.  Again...simple.  Crock pot, rump roast, bottle of bar-b-que sauce.  Combine and cook on low all day.  That is it.  End of day at dinner time.  Remove lid and you have the juiciest beef bar-b-que ever.  And you did not have to sweat one iota for it.

4.  College Girl makes a vegetarian version of matzo ball soup that we are all in love with.  She uses Vegetable Broth instead of Chicken.  Makes the matzo balls and cooks them in the veggie broth.  a
MATZO BALLS:Matzah Ball Chicken Soup
1 c. matzo meal (unsalted)
4 eggs
1/2 c. water
1/3 c. melted butter
1 tsp. salt
Dash of pepper
Mix eggs, water, salt, pepper and butter in medium sized mixing bowl. Place matzo meal in separate bowl. When liquid batter is thoroughly mixed, add gradually into matzo meal, constantly stirring. Stir matzo dough until all lumps are removed. (Batter will be the consistency of cake batter just slightly thicker.) Set aside in refrigerator for 1 hour for batter to thicken. When batter has been chilled, boil 1 1/2 quarts of vegetable soup. Add 1 tablespoon salt. Roll matzo dough into small balls and drop into boiling broth, one at a time. Cook for 20 minutes.

5.  Dear Hubby surprised me with a wonderful meal of Crab Stuffed Chicken breast.  Now it is in my top 10 of I wanna eat that.  It is worth the time and effort to make for a special meal.

6.  College Girl does up our Salmon Patties.  She is the queen there.  Simple and easy.  Patties from canned salmon mixed with salt, pepper, crackers and eggs.  Her secret is that she fries them up in a 1/2 veggie oil and 1/2 butter mixture.

7.  We all love Chicken n' Dumplings.  The best is by Poppa (CG's birth dad).  So we beg him to come over and cook this one for our combined families.  Of course that means dinner with Princess Emma so we are all for that too.  Time with the two families is something that makes us very happy.

Irish stew
8.  I do a winter stew called Left Over Stew.  What that is.....a big bowl with a lid stays in the freezer.  All of the meat, veggie and starch left overs then get placed in the bowl.  Once it is full we defrost and add to broth and heat.  Simple and dinner is served.  Since we save our broth from boiling chicken for meals, this is a pretty easy meal.

9.  Every one here says that my steaks are the best.  I don't know why?  I choose the cheapest steaks I can find.  (Budget)  Then I place them in a container with a lid.  Pour CHEAP red wine on them.  Place it in the fridge for the day to marinate.  That evening I heat a pan nice n hot.  Place in a couple pats of butter.  Salt n' Pepper the pan (yes the hot pan) and then lay in the steaks.  Let them cook on one side and turn them over.  Only turn them once.  A hot pan sears in the juices.  And by not turning them over time and time again, I do not lose any extra juice too.

10.  Our last choice is my Bar-B-Que Meat Loaf.  My ex would put bar-b-que sauce on everything.  So I decided to add it to my meat loaf.  It was a hit and is now the only version we make here.  Again easy.  Ground beef, eggs, crackers, chopped onion, chopped bell pepper and bar-b-que sauce.  Mix and bake.

Holidays Over?

Today is Monday and time to get back to business. Of course who wants to do that? No one. It is harder still for me (or so I think). Dear Hubby is still home and will be for another 4 more weeks. That is another 4 weeks of not moving. No walking, standing, pacing....the works. 4 weeks of laying on the couch being a lounge for the cats and dogs as they come and go off his stomach. Poor man.

So while needing to get back into the swing of things here I still feel like life is on a break. Since he is not up and leaving in the morning. Nor is College Girl while she is on her holiday break to. Our house is dead in the mornings. Gosh, (and don't faint) I even slept til 9:30 am today. HONESTLY!  It seems that Granny M is getting up early, leaving for her coffee clutch and then returning to a house of 1/2 dead people.  We are eating meals at off times.  But are having great meals at the same time.

Tonight we were blessed with home made cinnamon rolls and carmel cookies from Other Mother (Princess Emma's mom).  They brought over a big bowl of each.  I loved the time visiting with everyone again.  That is another thing.  We have had someone over every day for week pop in for a visit.  It has been wonderful.  Gosh no wonder I do not want to get back to work.

Of course I may not need too!  Today a family friend came by and the sweet young man cleaned for me.  REALLY!  He washed the dishes from lunch, swept and mopped.  Yes, a young man in his very early 20's volunteered to do my housework just because.  That was so nice of him.  Yes, I did check....he did not have a fever either.

So I know I need to get back to bills.  Get back to my reviews.  Look up my housework.  But I think tomorrow I will take Dear Hubby up to the office so he can say goodbye to a co-worker who is retiring.  Gosh that should eat up 1/2 the day right?  Work will still be here waiting for me.

A Country Christmas Eve

Christmas in the Country
'Twas the night before Christmas & out on the ranch
The pond was froze over & so was the branch.
The snow was piled up belly-deep to a mule.
The kids were all home on vacation from school,
And happier young folks you never did see-
Just all sprawled around a-watchin' TV.
Family watching television, c. 1958Then suddenly, some time around 8 o'clock,
There came a surprise that gave them a shock!
The power went off, the TV went dead!
When Grandpa came in from out in the shed
With an armload of wood, the house was all dark.
"Just what I expected," they heard him remark.
"Them power line wires must be down from the snow.
Seems sorter like times on the ranch long ago."Robert Blackwelder playing the fiddle: Dundee,...
"I'll hunt up some candles," said Mom.  "With their light,
And the fireplace, I reckon we'll make out all right."
The teen-agers all seemed enveloped in gloom.
Then Grandpa came back from a trip to his room,
Uncased his old fiddle & started to play
Hark! The Herald Angels SingThat old Christmas song about bells on a sleigh.
Mom started to sing, & 1st thing they knew
Both Pop & the kids were all singing it, too.
They sang Christmas carols, they sang "Holy Night,"
Their eyes all a-shine in the ruddy firelight.
They played some charades Mom recalled from her youth,
And Pop read a passage from God's Book of Truth.
They stayed up till midnight-and, would you believe,
The youngsters agreed 'twas a fine Christmas Eve.
Grandpa rose early, some time before dawn;
And when the kids wakened, the power was on..A Christmas tree inside a home.
"The power company sure got the line repaired quick,"
Said Grandpa - & no one suspected his trick.
Last night, for the sake of some old-fashioned fun,
He had pulled the main switch - the old Son-of-a-Gun!

My sisters like to make up nicknames for me. With a name like ELIZABETH, the choices are almost endless! I go by LIZ, but they try to call me any other nickname they can think of! And I always reply "Don't call me that!" so they think it's funny. And we're all over 25 now - so it's not like we're little kids. Sisters, huh?   Heather said...
...after reading this I can only sit here & laugh. I don't think I need to comment on this because after all you know the true story of my whole nutty family ...ooopsss did I say that ? Why yes I did ... ROFLMAO ..... it's all good though .....xoxoxoxo...HMM

As a bonus Christmas present I am adding in the newest Chicken Soup for the Soul book, Christmas Magic.  This way they can not only read about the nutty things families do but remember the amazing traditions that are brought on in their spirits too.

I love the forward for this book that if from Santa himself.  In his foreword  Santa Claus writes about how he and Mrs. Claus observe the festivities from the North Pole. He says, “We watch as you reunite scattered family members, enjoy the wonder on the face of a child, feel the joy of gift giving, and remember the true meaning of Christmas. We watch you gather with your communities at church, at school, and even at the mall, to share the special spirit of the season, brightening those long winter days.”

There are so many stories here to fill your soul.  I know that this is becoming one of my permanent Christmas traditions.  I have so enjoyed the evenings when I have read a story or two before going to sleep.  I have also slept better having such nice stories rolling around in my mind too.  With 101 stories that just about covers the time for me from Halloween til Christmas to help me get and stay in the spirit!

I also would like to let you know that CSftS has a great facebook page too.  You might wanna visit them there.

From the Voice of the Other Mother

I received a book this last week that I wanted to share with Other Mother (Princess Emma's mom).  You see poor PE suffers from allergies as well as her mother.  college Girl and I have some too.  Thankfully when OM saw the book she snatched it up quick.  Now she has written me back what her thoughts were after reading it.  So I am sharing the information with you too.

This is what Other Mother had to say:
Recently, I was able to read a great book called Asthma Allergies Children: A parents guide by Paul Ehrlich, M.D. and Larry Chiaramonte, M.D. with Henry Ehrlich. My dear friend over at Crazed Mind thought I might benefit from this since my daughter, Princess Emma has allergies and asthma runs strongly in my family.
This book was wonderful! It is chock full of information, good useful information.Everything from why the body responds to allergens to what the medicines are and how they work. It talks about seasonal allergies, food allergies and asthma in a way that is informative but still interesting. Dr. Ehrlich does a wonderful job of explaining things in an understandable way so that you can adapt them into your every day life. There are tons of tips and even nutritional information to help ease a little ones discomfort from allergies of all kinds. Above and beyond that this is written to help children, it would also help adults who suffer from these problems as well. I would definitely recommend getting a copy of this book if you or anyone in your family suffers from allergies or asthma.

I also found out the following from this book, Asthma, Allergies, Children: A Parent’s Guide where two of the most experienced pediatric allergy specialists in the country tackle the myths and realities of allergies and asthma and offer up a new manifesto to help parents and children cope with the irritants and hazards of the world we live in.  Their easy-to-understand and lively book takes the mystery out of the medicine and pathology, using stories and humor to educate and motivate people to take the right actions.

The allergic process is compared what happens to with the military in a battle or a war.

Initially, the special forces parachute in and do reconnaissance in enemy territory, identifying command centers and strategic targets for attack.  Then the infantry lands and there’s aerial bombardment, where the enemy is destroyed, but the surrounding tissue is threatened with collateral damage.  Finally, there’s a third phase, with land mines and unexploded bombs left behind, and snipers and saboteurs remain underground while the civilian population struggles to recover.

The culprit is inflammation, the doctors say: “Inflammation is the most dangerous allergic response.  Redness, swelling, pain, itching, or heat can all be important symptoms of an allergy.  What happens if a cut goes untreated? An alarming infection can set in.  Now imagine this happening in your child’s sinuses.  Just because you can’t see the inflammation doesn’t mean that your child is not suffering.”

Inflammation in the lungs can cause asthma – a wheezing shortness of breath that can be minor or so severe as to cause permanent damage and even death.

Many physicians have a hard time identifying asthma; it is misdiagnosed 30% of the time.  They are even reluctant to use the A-word, because it is alarming to parents.  But denial is counterproductive and a wait-and-see attitude is a recipe for chronic inflammation and permanent damage to the lungs.

Parents can use the same checklist of symptoms used by physicians to help diagnose asthma in school-aged children:

Does your child:

·       Make noisy or wheezy sounds when breathing?
·       Have a hard time taking a deep breath?
·       Have a hard time breathing in cold weather?
·       Develop coughs that won’t go away?
·       Complain about chest tightness or pain after running?
·       Wake up at night coughing?
·       Have itchy, puffy or burning eyes or a runny, stuffy nose?
·       Cough around pets?

In addition, one of the best diagnostic tools centers on a quick evaluation of the child’s quality of life and boils down to three simple questions:

  1. Do you sleep tight?
  2. Do you work right?
  3. Do you play with might?

Each of these questions reflects a key signal of illness and health in the asthmatic child.

All sorts of misnomers and common myths are clarified. Big cities, with a high concentration of pollutants in the air, are a canary in a mine for the rest of the country.  But no region is safe; recent research shows that asthma is as prevalent in rural areas as in the cities.

Parents who are fearful of using steroids because athletes have given them a bad name.  But this is an urban myth.  In reality your child’s medicine is a different thing entirely, an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid, derived from the adrenal cortex, not the anabolic steroids which turns 97-pound weaklings into the Incredible Hulk, which are derived from testosterone.

Food allergies, particularly, are misunderstood and misdiagnosed and frequently result in malnutrition.

The bottom line? The most important thing that parents can do is to see an allergy specialist.  Get a referral or get an appointment, do whatever it takes.  Seeing a specialist is to best way to make sure your child gets the best and most effective treatment.

Guys this is a Cool way to be a Geek!

Well I do have a couple of last minute gifts to wrap up. There are some I still have to get in the mail and am afraid being home bound has messed up getting them there in time. I will cross my fingers and pray though. Do you also have this issue? I can not believe we have less than a week to go!

Here are my last minute gifts. And some fun ones in my opinion. My first is for my brother and hopefully he will share with his daughter. They are quirky and very scientific in thought. So I knew this would be right up his alley. I mean how many people have a home lab and workshop? He does! Snip, Burn, Solder, Shred is a really cool book on how to make Seriously geeky stuff with your kids. HONEST! Everything from a simple electric guitar to screen printed shirts. The great thunder drums and board games and even (safe) way to make a joy buzzer. I love the treasure chest to keep your special things in. Every kid needs that. And of course what family is not in need of a marshmallow muzzle loader? With just a lil ability to follow direction you too can be the king of geek and a cool dad too!

Cookies, Friends & Fun

We had so much fun the other day making Christmas cookies. Thankfully Princess Emma was available to help out.
As well as Other Mother (P.E.'s mom) and her secret ingredient the wine cooler.  You know it makes making cookies so easy.
Having this nifty lil cookie shooter that College Girl gave me for a gift a few years ago is pretty fantastic.  Thanks Pudds.
Princess Emma can now make cookies faster than any elf at the North Pole.
They even was able to decorate the trees, easy peasy.

After our busy day of cookie making we had fun with a shirt for Princess Emma.  It is body heat activated to change colors.  Hers is light blue and turns white.  If was so funny, she was having us make wishes and then 'blow' them onto her shirt.  Covering it with white splotches everywhere.  Once the area cools it goes back to light blue.  Too much fun.  If you want to find these kids clothes look them up with Quagmire Kids. They also change colors in direct sunlight too.  Pretty cool!
