Random Tuesday Happy Birthday Day

Even though the Un-Mom is not popping up her Random Tuesday, I am going to continue on with it. Why? Well, I just love it. Simple huh?

So here we go.

1.  Giveaway Blogs by UPrinting is having a photo smile contest.  It is easy to enter and get your votes on facebook too.  The winner will receive  a Gift certificate to purchase a Flip MINOHD 4GB courtesy of UPrinting.  I put up this photo as my entry.

2.  BTW, Happy Birthday to College Girl!  Today is her 24th birthday.  I am so happy for her.  Looks like she is ready to celebrate already too!  We will have a cake tonight but her party will be Saturday night.  Doing up shrimp two ways, steaks and crab stuffed chicken.  She is also having a margarita cheesecake and a tipsy tiramisu for dessert.  Her drink of choice?  Butter Beer aka cream soda and butterscotch schnapps.

3.  If your one of the ladies who joined in on Crazed Minds Book Swap, then this is the week to send off your packages.  Just a reminder gals!

4.  I have a winner for the Very Hungry Caterpillar prize.  But since I am still waiting on the package to arrive so I can then send it on to the winner....I am holding off on the announcement.  Sorry folks....sometimes it is just like this ya' know?

5.  This is weird....just weird!  Tinkle Tube.

6.  Did you know that on this day in 1886, John Pemberton brewed the first batch of Coca-Cola in his backyard in Georgia.  It was first sold as a patent medicine for the treatment of, among other things, morphine addiction, dyspepsia, neurasthenia, headache, and impotence.  Think I need to grab me a Coca-Cola....diet for me!

Well thanks for stopping by today.  And have a coke.  Or a slice of birthday cake with us.

DH Hits the Mark

This weekend was a busy one for us. We did lawn detail. Managed quite a bit but have tons more to do. Of course that is how it always is.  Our compost bin is full and now having to just be rotated on a regular basis.  And half of our leaves are all raked up from the winter and fall.  We also tilled the front yard in the constant battle to kill the stickers.  Have put out weed killer twice now.  Today I hope it warms up a lil so I can start raking out the dead weeds.  Later we will fertilize more and then plant grass.

Our weekend was full of work but it one where Dear Hubby and I were very happy with each other.  Not the heat of love but the constant happiness of being together.  It is growing more and more as the years tick by.  I know that when we were first dating and DH would say something sweet, I would remark what page in his lil black book was it from.  I just knew he had to have some lil handbook to tell him all the right things.  I had never met a man that showed me so much love and understanding.  Well, he says he did not have one but I have found just that book!  Really!  And it is a Lil Black Book too!  Stuff Every Husband Should Know is the perfect gift for the Man new to wed or this upcoming Fathers Day.  It is another great book from Quirk.  So what does every husband need to know?  Well how about wife space comes before man cave?  True.  And how to say I love you in elvish (think J. R. R. Tolkin), Amin mela lle.  I know women that would do backflips for that...okay odd.  Others are how to serve breakfast in bed, politely looking at other women and how to meet your wife's friends husbands.  It is really a wealth of information that men can use.  I am going to introduce Dear Hubby to how to fold clothes.  Hope it works!

Well if that is not enough then how about learning 150 Secrets to a Happy Wife by Joe Gumm.  Now I think Dear Hubby has mastered this book.  Why?  Well, he makes me happy.  I mean I can curl up next to him, lay my head on his chest, then drool away.  Yes, he has that effect on me.  I see that this has so many times of telling men to help with the housework.  I agree but only a lil.  Why?  Well I am home ALL the time.  I can do the housework and actually like it.  But I know I am not the norm.  Most women really do want and need help with the housework.  You know how busy life is now days.  But I do like the way this book reads.  More like man to man.  A friend who is sharing those secrets that are time tested.  My favorite chapter is titled, Quit acting like your the Man and be THE Man.  Oh this is a chapter men need, especially young husbands.  Wish it was something they had to read before wedding vows could be uttered! Of course this book was written by a Texas man, you know big, strong and sweet as can be.

Oh, I will say it again.  I am not paid for these books.  We all know that.  Just an avid reader who is lucky enough to get to share them with you.

Perfect Pairings: Blue Eyes

For this Sunday's Perfect Pairings (link along with That's Baloney), I wanted to share a child's eyes with you. And the verse I have for it is:

And the Lord appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing in front of him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth and said, “O Lord, if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant.  Genesis 18:1-3 ESV

This is Princess Emma, I know you all know her.  And her lovely shining blue eyes!  I have to say that this lil lady has made my world one of joy that I could have never realized.  As I have said before she is my College Girls lil sissy but not my daughter.  She is the daughter of my Ex and JenJo (my friend and love).  And the group of us make a wonderful happy family.  Just goes to show that divorce does not mean all those horrid images at all.  But can be done with love and kindness.  Remembering it is the children who always come first.

We recently shared Beautiful Blue Eyes with Princess Emma as her newest bed time story.  It is another of the books by Marianne Richmond.  She has put out many wonderful children's books. Her career was launched by accident; she was diagnosed with a brain tumor (thankfully benign), the cause of numerous epileptic seizures through her childhood. During her five-week recovery period, Marianne created hand-painted thank you cards for her many well-wishers. With Jim’s, her then new boyfriend, and friend’s encouragement, she decided to launch her own greeting card business, Marianne Richmond Studios, Inc. As distribution for her cards increased, she decided to try her hand at writing a book, honoring her biggest fan, her now-husband Jim, with The Gift of an Angel.  Her books have continued and this is the latest one.  To celebrate that Blue Eyed child in your life.

She says in her book:

“I watched, and I waited
as your eyes chose their hue,
deciding in time
on their beautiful blue.

Blue as a butterfly
or the sparkling sea.
Blue as the bluebird
who sings in her tree.”

Isn't that musical?  I love it and plan on sharing it with my other blue eyed beauties, my grandbabes!

And as always, I do not get paid for book reviews.  I just get to enjoy them.  Isn't that lucky?

Wordless Wednesday

I think I have something in my eye. Right there! Can you see it?

Yeah, I can't either. Dang it!

The Way We Are

Today I am sitting here listening to Barbara Streisand sing the song The Way We Were.  Who can hear that and not tear up.  Somewhere inside of yourself there is a memory that it tugs on.  That time you held hands for just a bit longer than any other time.  Or when you caught your breath that time you say them turn and look at you.  Knowing that someone loves you all the way into your soul.

I love my husband so deeply.  Feeling so very special that he looks at me with the love deep in his eyes.  Knowing how he makes my toes curl and my stomach flutter.  I am sure this feeling will always be a part of our relationship.  But it will change too as we age.  We are entering our later stages of life.  And our love is strong as ever but there are other parts that are beginning to take a dip.

My mom-in-law told me that it grows into a deeper love.  Her and my dad-in-law lay in bed at night holding hands.  They say their prayers together and share the day in soft whispers.  Clinging to the love that has taken them through more than 50 years of marriage.  The physical has cooled but never the emotional.  Do you see when that time is coming?  I feel it could be around the corner for us.

Eden CafeNot that I want that but see the foreshadowing of a time to come.  It has made me start looking at how to keep the spark alive there.  I have heard so much about EdenFantasys online, I am sure you have too.  So I had a look around at Eden Cafe (their blog) to see if there was any advice for us.  I know there are all kinds of toys and such, but is there a magic thing to give us our energy back?  I mean when you both just look at each other and say I love you but my back hurts too dang much?  It has happened.

Well?  I know many of y'all are younger but there has to be others out there in this situation.  Where your knees are shaking but not from the sexual tremor.  What do you do?  Tell me.  I am not ready to just hold hands, but I am thrilled it is his hand I am holding.  Maybe I can find a few tricks of the trade over at EdenFantasys.  Who knows?

Boostering My Mommies

Well lately I have been worried about my girls and their roles as mommies.  Not that I worry about their abilities but how they are holding up.  Vannah is a wonderful mom and I am always blown away at how calm she is with the grandbabes.  And Stacy is learning so much as she is beginning her role as a mom to be.  But I know that being a mom is a big job.  All of y'all that agree hold up your hands.   Yeah, I see all of them.

I know that these girls need a pat on the back to booster their self esteem.  And I have it for them in a form they will so understand.  Yo Momma!  And not the ones on yo' momma is so....put in degrading thought here.  But instead these.

Yo momma so remarkable she ain't just yo momma...she's yo best friend!  Respect

Yo momma so sweet that I'm going to get diabetes if she kisses me on the cheek one more time.

Yo momma smells so good I wanna hang her from the rear view mirror.

Yo momma so perceptive I only have to say half of what I mean, she just gets me.

I found all of these in the Yo Momma so Extraordinary by Zachary Reese and Ethan McCcreadie.  It is one way to give these two ladies a high five, two thumbs up and YO!  Thanks to Quirk Books for sending this one my way.

Now on to my 'girls'.  One is a single mom of two kiddos (my lovely grandbabes) and the other is a mommy to be.  Each of them are trying so hard to be good moms that they tend to forget that they are worthwhile.  I know that Vannah is thinking of her kiddos all of the time.  And Stacy is anticipating what is to come.  I wanted to share with them that they are putting in wonderful everyday lessons for all to see.  It is like The Tao of Motherhood by Vimala McClure.  Where it has become automatic for Vannah to provide the right foods for her children, teaching them that these are the ones they desire to eat.  I am so proud when I here my grandbabes ask for water to drink, not sodas and the such.  Staci is learning that she has to strive for clarity in her life.  To see what motivates her and her relationships so she can share that love and wonder with her baby to be.  I love the one on Serenity in The Tao of Motherhood.

The best mothering looks like no mothering.
Smothering heats up, stillness cools.
Be a still, cool stream for you child's agitation.
A serene mother rocks the universe in her arms and
All is Well.
I know that our baby 'Turtle' is now a lil boy.  Stacy and Lil John are thinking up names right now for this new grandbabe.  I am hoping for a good strong name.  My grandson's name is Landon Lyric.  I love that name.  The name Landon makes me think of Michael Landon from Bonanza and Little House on the Prairie fame.  He made us see a strong moral man who stood up for his family.  Lyric denotes music that fills our hearts with joy.  I see Landon Lyric as his name suggest, strong, loving and full of joy.
I hear they are thinking of the name Scott Wayne for our lil turtle to be.  I love the way that sounds.  Scott with that thought of hearing a burr in the voice as it rolls off the tongue.  And Wayne makes me think of that John Wayne swagger.  I can see a grandbabe that will charm you one minute and make you swoon the next.  I am going to share my new lil yellow book, Bring Back Beatrice! with them.  Here they can read about name origins and see the meaning and character of a name.  That was where I found the information for the names above.

As always, any books here mentioned may be gifts to me.  I am never paid for listing them.

What Else May Go In The Bag

In going over my selections for Crazed Mind's Book Swap I have found a few more that have really helped me out.  And one that I will forever treasure reading.

As you have been told before, I have to deal with mental illnesses.  And that alone creates great anxiety for me.  Add in that I also deal with dyslexia, especially where numbers come into play.  Well you can just imagine how it is for me paying the bills, balancing the budget and the every terror of filing taxes.  Honestly, just a few weeks ago I went to Granny M with my bills in hand asking her to help me out once again.  I just can not tell you the fear numbers give me.  Little on the idea that I will never measure up when it comes to holding it together handling the household finances.

Well I am lucky to tell you about 3 books that have helped me in different ways.  The first is The Worrier's Guide to Overcoming Procrastination.  Yes, that is me and paying bills or doing the taxes or filing for College Girls FASFA and on and on and on. I liked learning that changes can be made.  I learned whether it be consciously or not, we all follow our own rule book in life. We have a set of rules that has led us to put things off and avoid tasks. To make long-term changes, it’s crucial to rewrite your rule book. By changing your rules, you’ll make yourself much less vulnerable to procrastination and find those once enduring to-do list items cleared away, making space for new projects and goals.

Kevin L. Gyoerkoe, Psy.D., coauthor of The Worrier’s Guide to Overcoming Procrastination,  is codirector of the Anxiety and Agoraphobia Treatment Center in Illinois.  Here are 5 rules you can relearn.

Old Rule #1: Avoidance works. If a situation feels bad, I should avoid it. It’s bad to feel bad. Feeling anxious means there’s something wrong with me. (Oh this one I had mastered.)

New Rule #1: I can face it. I’ll do what I need or want to do regardless of how I feel. Feeling anxious at times is normal and doesn’t mean something is wrong with me.

Old Rule #2: Perfection is possible. High standards motivate me. I can’t live with mistakes. I won’t feel good unless things are “right.”  (My OCD makes me feel I have to have everything just right!)

New Rule #2: Good enough is okay. I realize striving for perfection leaves me paralyzed, so I am for a standard that allows me to move forward.

Old Rule #3: Failure is unacceptable. I can’t tolerate failing. If I’m not sure I can succeed, I shouldn’t try. Failing is shameful.  (We all must have grown up learning we must succeed.)

New Rule #3: Failure is part of life. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. Failure is a normal part of life. If I’m falling short somewhere, I’ll take steps to boost my skills. (Know this but have not taken it in well.)

Old Rule #4: It should feel right. There is a right time, place, and mood for getting things done. I need to wait for these moments.  (Do you also think you should wait til everything is just right?)

New Rule #4: The time is now. I can accomplish a lot even if I don’t feel perfectly focused or motivated. If I have a few minutes, I can get started now rather than wait until later.  (AKA get off my duff and get to work!)

Old Rule #5: I shouldn’t have to. If something is boring or unpleasant, I shouldn’t have to do it. I deserve to have fun.  (Now this is not me now or ever!)

New Rule #5: Let’s get it over with. Sometimes I need to do things that I don’t necessarily want to do. The quicker it gets done, the sooner I can have fun.  (I have learned this one early on!)

The next book helped me on the next step of learning.  My self-esteem is not the best.  I put on a great face of being open and brave, but inside I quake in my boots.   It is funny that we see children and they are so curious, creative and hopeful creatures. That the world around the is a place filled with wonder and opportunity. But I grew up with a troubled childhood that taught me to fear, hate and harm myself.  Dr. Louise Hart has written On the Wings of Self-Esteem to get us to change going in the right direction again, and recover one’s self-esteem.  She writes "Self-esteem—or the lack thereof—dictates how we manage our lives. It is essential for mental health, well-being, and healthy families."  I know from experience that this is a very true statement.  Improving my self-esteem is one of the most important things I can do to develop  the courage to make good lifestyle decisions, set boundaries and even lose weight.   I learn more and more that loosening the grip of the past, is the way to grow within myself.   As Dr. Hart says, “Transformation introduces infinite possibilities for joy, adventure, love, and delight which bring lightness and continual renewal to the soul. Life itself becomes its own reward.”

But the best book I have read lately is a memoir by Nelson Lauver.  Oh my, this book took me though his life as a book and connected me to the fear he grew up with.  And eventually overcame with amazing results.  Most UN-Likely to Succeed is a very moving book.  I can tell you that Nelson who was made to feel like a throwaway kid though out his public education learned that he could learn.  Dealing with an undiagnosed  learning disability in the 70's and 80's made school a living hell.  Later through an amazing turn of events Nelson has become The American Story Teller across the country.  When Nelson was 29, making a living as the man who painted parking lot stripes, he discovered that he had never been diagnosed with dyslexia.  It is rare I tell you to go out and get a book, but this is now on my top to share list.  Oh and I hope to tell Nelson Lauver, that yes having good women around him is a plus in life.  Please tell Aunt Leonore that Lenore of Crazed Mind is happy she is one of your supporting characters!

And as always, these books are great to read.  I am a lucky woman to have the chances to review books.  But I do not now or ever get paid for this.

Perfect Pairings: Gifts

Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. (Romans 12:4-6a)

I wanted to match up with the Perfect Pairings from That's Baloney today.  Today I did a test on spiritual gifts to see what mine are.  I was not surprised to see  Exhortation and Serving as my strong fronts.

If you would like to see what are your gifts, then go take this quiz.

Up, Up, Up & a Sudden Down

See-sawImage by _val_ via Flickr
I will return soon.  Currently I am still in a bit of pain.  You see grown BIG women should not play on the tee-ta-totter.  It tends to throw them off.  Yeah fell on my derrière, aka busted my butt big time. That has me walking with quite a limp.  Laying down or sitting for any length of time has me all cramped up.  So it is a lil time this way, a lil time that way and a lot of pain getting from here to there.
And, L. Diana Wolfe at Spunk on a Stick gave me the Stylish Blogger Award. She has a great blog and a wonderful spirit!  A fellow book worm, thank goodness!  I am passing it on to:

What is in the Bag?

I am so happy to do the book swap. Already we have had a few request that I have been able to accommodate.  One swapper wishes to have Christian books.  While another is swapping cookbooks.  Pretty good ideas.  I am linking up people right now and will be getting the swap info to each one by tomorrow.  Meanwhile my bookshelf has been perused for the last few days.  Trying to see what I might swap.  Well here are four books that might end up in my swap bag for someone else to enjoy too.

My first one that may go in the bag is The Quest of the Warrior Sheep.  This is a fun lil farce in juvenile fiction.  Following just what Sal the sheep does when he was bonked on the head by an UFO.  Rushing to the others they decide that it is a sign that Lord Aries is in trouble.  The sheep posse takes off to save him while having to battle the bank robbers who are looking for their UFO (actually a cell phone).  I can't wait to get the next book, The Warrior  Sheep go West.  I am sure that it will be just as fun.

The next one is from two of the funniest guys on radio, Rick and Bubba.  We Be Big is the mostly true story of how two kids form Calhoun County, Alabama, became Rick and Bubba.  I had one of their books before on marriage.  It had me rolling with laughter.  So this one was quite welcome to cross my path.  Here we see how these two country boys made it to the big time in radio.  Hearing the truth mixed in with down home humor.  I know that these guys could be my next door neighbors....heck would love that at bar-b-que time!

Oh and did I tell you I have a Cozy Mystery?  I love this one.  Ann Summerville, our transplant Texan, brought home the story in High Tide.  We travel to Ann's homeland of England with Giovanna Matthews.  Here she discovers a body that drifted in the high tide.  Not believing that it was an accident, Gia starts working to uncover the mystery around the village.  While this is all going on, Gia's boyfriend has a visitor that is not welcome at all.  Gia has to go between the mysterious death and the unwelcome visitor trying to find out what is going on and not lose her footing too.  Pretty hard to do.

My last one is a book that has moved me to tears.  Forgiveness: A Time to Love and a Time to Hate will be featured on PBS in April on the 17th and the 24th.  This topic is so hard for most people to really embrace.  But in Forgiveness I have read how people in the most amazing situations have found that it is for their balance to forgive.  My own past has had some horror stories that in time I learned to forgive.  Now I did not say forget as that will never happen.  But in forgiving those who have cause me damage, I was healed.  The anger, depression and pain is not carried around every day.  Instead I am free to be myself, whole and healthy once again.  Forgiveness will be a hard one not to share as well as one I want to keep too.  An amazing book on healing from within.  If you wish you can follow them on facebook.

I am lucky enough to have these books to review.  And thankfully to share too.  Of course, I am never paid for any of this.  Instead I just have the pleasure of reading.  Oh what joy that is!

Spring is in the Air

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Pier 1 for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

Yes we have changed time this last weekend.  And it feels so pretty outside.  May have a lil nip in the air in the mornings but by mid day it is beautiful outside.  We are moving all of Granny M's plants back to our large front porch too!  So now, I am ready to spruce it up out there and get the color going once again.

One of the things I want (since I love frogs) is from Pier 1.  This is a cute watering pitcher.  Granny M gave me a multi color frog planter for Christmas this year.  Well wouldn't this be perfect with it.  And if you visit www.pier1.com/outdoor you can sign up for a special in-store offer for this weekend of March 18 - 20.

I started poking around the Pier 1 site and found some real colorful furniture that would be perfect on my porch.   My favs would be this chair that comes in yellow, blue and red.  I love that it can also be used inside too.  Need extra seating at one of the many dinners we throw here, well pull the chairs off the porch and bring them inside.  Make it quite festive too.  Pair up these chairs with this table and it would be time to start playing games outside once again.

I signed up for the Pier 1 Outdoor newsletter  so that I may know of what specials are coming up.   And I plan on joining in on the Pier 1 Tweetups  that are coming up.  Here is the schedule.

Dallas: March 22nd  Atlanta: April 5th  NYC: April 20th
