What the Who?

I am an inventive woman. And the mother of invention is called Necessity. Necessity insist that I pay the bills here. In order to do so I have found many ways to bring in the bacon. One way is that I run an answering service for a local plumber. In return he has the phone and internet as his business account. See inventive?

So 7 days a week we are here to take his calls. And of course we have telemarketers too. But sometimes your just not sure who is who. A phone call can be from someone who just does not understand what an answering service does. (Hey we get this all the time.) Often you hear us say Who Just Called? As the person would not leave a message.

Well I found a way around that. I can now go to a website and plunk in the phone number. (Don't you just love caller ID.?) If it is a telemarketer then it normally pops up and tells me so. Sometimes the call may be from a business who is looking for a local plumber. But will not leave a message. They think if they call back he will answer the phone. Of course they always get Moi'. Now I know weather to pass on a message or not.

So if you call and you get sweet lil ol me. Then tell me the problem and I will do my best to get a plumber right out to you. Of course, I am not sure if you want the service call when your not right here in town.

CG Favorite Thing

I asked CG what she was most looking forward to during her Spring Break. And her reply was TV! You see she does not have a TV with her this semester in her dorm. She did the first time she was there but they did not have satellite available to them there. She found that she did not watch much TV with what they provided. So coming home for a week she is hoping to catch up on some of her favorite shows.

CG likes what TV offers. Her favorite channel is Bravo for the design and cooking shows they have. Next is the SciFi channel. I know that she hopes to find a Top Chef marathon so she can watch all of this last season.

I know that here it is the last thing I have as a luxury. I think that in cutting my budget I just do not want to lose TV. It is not that I watch it all the time but I do have so much of my evenings alone. And my mom says she can not sleep without it on. DH likes that we have games on through our TV. And when he comes in late at night it is something that helps him unwind before bed. So I guess during this economy we will scrimp and keep it in our budget.

Man Toys

Dan, Dan !!!

I have found the place that calls your name. With all the work you have to do around your house remodeling then your going to love this.

You can find all of your workshop and home improvement needs all right here. And no it is not where you work! You can pop over here and search for just the right tool. Then, automatically, it will start searching all the places you can find it. Think of the budget savings you can find. Where what is on sale at when you really need it! What a life saver there. Heck you could even find those "man toys" that you really really wanted.

I swear my DH gets near a home improvement place and his pulse quickens. I hope I still have that same effect on him myself. So Dan, go check this out and see if you are able to click fast enough?????

Well life here is still quiet. Not much doing. I keep thinking I need to de-clutter my home. I have even ordered a book from PaperbackSwap.com to help me. I am fighting the urge to just start throwing away tons of stuff. And to take everything off the walls. Sometimes it just feels like the stuff is taking over. If I can get rid of it all then the house will feel clean and right.

None of this makes sense since my home is not dirty. Lived in yes! And there does not matter what I remove it will still just be an old house. I am not sure why everything feels so overwhelming here. I think it is all due to my finances.

I am use to always taking care of all the bills. And having had childcare before to help pay them worked out. I have not had that in 6 months. I am now having to depend on others to have enough money to do it all. It is not working well enough. I really need to make more money and I am unsure as to what to do. This is more than likely why I feel so overwhelmed with "things" and want to purge it all.

Do you feel that way at times? How do you handle stress of bills? What is your "quick" fix when your unsure as what to do?

Yes I confess! I am a Frugal Hacker. We all have to be these days. Need ways to save money, time and this lovely green earth. I think part of being frugal is also being green. And here is a web site that not only has post on ways to save money. But now has a Forum too! Yes a way for you to share with others your own tips and ideas.

Better yet! (You know by now I am going to let you in on a great program) You have a chance to win $125.00 CASH. Yes! Honest you do. I already have a good chance of winning $100.00 myself. So does Nessa. So we have to let you know how to get yours also.

I will draw among the first 50 people who post at least 25 entries on the forum. There are just a few commonsense rules.

ENTER TO WIN $100 CASH:

  1. You must register to post or start a new topic. Anyone can read, but you must be logged in to post. It's easy. This prevents spam, and it allows me to see how many times you've entered.
  2. Your entries must have some substance. They don't all have to be brilliant and innovative, but they must have some meaning and be related to frugal living. You can't just say, "Me too," or "Good point" twenty-five times.
  3. You must have 25 published entries. I reserve the right to delete any post or topic at any time. If you know me, I use this right very sparingly. I'm really just covering the bases here.
  4. The final decision is mine. If several people cross the 25-entries line at the same time, I might end up with 53 people in the drawing instead of just the first 50. If less than 50 people qualify, the drawing will be cancelled. You have to promise not to complain, mkay?

So get hoppin'! Go register (it's easy) and start gabbing. Share your wisdom, or pose your question. Let's help each other learn how to live on less!

Promoting my Small Town Business to the Locals

1st I would like to ask you to visit my
100 item give away blog
and these other give aways too!
Thank you.

"OOPs one other thing, this shop at home thing is a bunch of bull, have you ever noticed how many people that advertise in the shop at home page in the CC (local paper) that are in the big box stores? Well I have and there is a lot to be said about that! The chamber, sec and directors even shop big at Sams and Wal Mart as many other business owners here do, but I will not mention them" from a local bulletin board

My response!
*note: We are a small town that is 2 miles by 2 miles in size. We do not have Wal-marts, CVS or Walgreens. And only one grocery store with two "dollar" stores. So pickins' are slim here. It is just a idea of know how to shop and where your money is going, in my opinion.
Well they may. But I would not know. One I do not know them personally and two would never see them. I am a firm believer in "shop at home". First this is our town and we should support it all we can. Otherwise small towns do dry up and and blow away. Look at how long Harry's (a local and large clothing store) was here and now is gone. And we do not have any competition for Brookshires anymore. (We lost the only IGA we had to compete with the one chain store) Yes some things may be higher priced. Buy the sales and stock up! Then you have it when you need it and at a good price. But there also others who are so name brand psyched that they would not dream of shopping at the dollar stores for clothes and other items. I find more good unique gifts for my family and friends at the "antique" stores through out the year than anywhere else. Talk to the people who work these stores. They will steer you to the good sales there too. No I do not buy into hype and am not the Wii generation. But I know that I also do not want to drive 60+ miles on a round trip to do my grocery or daily buying. Factor in the cost of gas (which thank God is coming down) to your bill and you may find it was better to stay right here at home to shop. Also look at the great deals around you. They are there. At Brookshires they put veggies and fruit out for $1 a bag. Yes some is not the best. But look. We often purchase fresh food this way. Go home and pick out the best, cut and freeze it. Now we have the ability to have fresh veggies to cook and not buy the lil frozen bags that cost so much more. We do the same with discounted meats. Of course you have to look at it and pick the best but you can do it. The dollar stores have sales all the time. Stock up when they do, an the daily items, so you have them when you need them. Now your not running out at the last minute to purchase something that is no longer on sale. Allsups has the best prices on milk and bread anywhere in town. And collect those milk stamps for your free gallon. Heck if your going out to eat purchase the larger order. It is only a couple of dollars more and you now have a second meal. Yeah, really! Don't eat is all and make yourself ill. Get a to-go plate at the beginning of the meal and put up half. Now you do not have to fix lunch the next day or dinner that night. Or you have lunch for a couple of small kids even. And all for a couple of dollars? (anyone can do this) And make it to these great night outs available here. .99 burger and .69 taco nights at DQ, Pizza Pro has a great deal on Monday nights. From 5:30-7:00 you can order a one topping pizza and get it for the price of the time of the phone call. Yeah! A pizza for $5.30. Great deal. Cheap food and good at the same time. The Bar-B-Que place on Austin has a great deal on chopped sandwiches. Grab up some and serve at home with some chips for a easy night of no cooking. Surprise. The hospital cafeteria is really good. Large portions as you help yourself. Great time to get a to go meal and split it with your partner or friend. Jonesing for a soda? Do a refill at Taylors for lil cost (Keep your cups) or go to Sonic for "Happy Hour". And who can beat coffee with all the local news at one of the coffee shops in the morning. You want to know what is happening? Just ask these guys. Need a night out. Go to the square and play games. Yes games. Darts, Pool, Air Hockey, Foosball and even Dominoes. We took ten dollars in quarters. And the 3 of us played games for a couple of hours. That was less then $1.50 per person per hour. Who can beat that one. (Oh and bring your own drink too!) Or set up a game night at your house for friends. Do a potluck spread and games. We do every Friday night. A different meal each week, games and time with family and friends. Don't want to host it every time? Make a roving night and let each host once a month. 4 friends = 4 houses. At Movie Visions you can get 5 movies for 5 days for $5 and can be a great weekend relief. Time to relax with the kids, do some pop corn and reconnect with each other over older flicks that you enjoyed over time. Share those same movies with your kids and grand kids. Also know that your kids can rent a free movie with each A on their report card. What a good incentive from a local business. Friends from out of town for the weekend? Go to the Vineyards and do a wine tasting. It is free. Share the museum for local history. Low cost. Yes I am all for supporting our home town. After all--we chose to live here!

Now for your local town. What do you have? Were are your favorite sales? What have you found in ways of cutting budget and still getting out of the house? Have you promoted this to others? Are you looking for alternatives? Do you have ideas to share? Please tell us and maybe we can add them on here or on your own blog!

Saturday Plans

1st I would like to ask you to visit my
100 item give away blog
and these other give aways too!
Thank you.

Well I am not taking pictures of where I received two shots at yesterday. LOL Are you not glad! Yes I went ahead and went to the Doctor. Not to common for me. But was afraid that if I waited til Monday when the office would be open again that I would be in emergency before that. My throat was really closing up on me and an ear ache was well on its way to a major throbbing. So now I have some super antibiotics and a cough syrup that has lots of things in it. Honestly who can pronounce the names of these things. Let's just call them what they are. Make me feel better pills and soothes the throat syrup. Works for me.

Now what is up for today. Since I can get up and move around better I plan on posting the banana bread recipe for Captain Dumbass (actually his wife) and hope they have a lovely breakfast soon. Easy recipe!

Then I plan on catching up on my checkbook and bills. I hate this day every month. I have dyslexia and have to add, re add and re add to get it right. Gives me major anxiety and headaches.

And next I wish to move some things in the dining room, pull up tack board, lay tiles and have my new cabinet moved in. My CG made it for me before Christmas. And it has been on my front porch waiting to come inside. It will take 2-4 men to move it. Yes it is that heavy. Well since we have all been sick, doing holidays and working too much (depends on who you are), we have not had the ability to get the cabinet in the house. If all goes well I will have pictures of it on here soon.

Next I need to make a really good dinner. My hubby is going on his 20th day of working in a row. Yes, I did say 20 days. And he has been ill during this time. I have been under the weather too so again dear CG has been picking up major slack. Well one of her best friends is coming in for college for a week to stay with us. It is time for CG to have some fun. So I need a good meal for my hubby and then can tuck him into bed. He only has 6 more days to go before he may have a day off. I know, I know! It does me no good to let him know he will be working 26 days in a row. This is why when he does have a day off all he does is sleep for the complete day. Working from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m and again from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. is not an easy schedule for anyone. And of course he does not always leave at 10 p.m. 12 1/2 hours a day is not always what he gets. Most of the time it is more! Ok you now know this is my sore spot. Sorry for the rant. Guess it is bothering me again.

So tell me what are your weekend plans?

Week 3 of Combined Meals

Well for week 3 we all splurged on our food. But I still feel that we did a good job. The total cost of food for Mon-Fri was $65.60. We had 8 people eating 5 dinners and 3 people eating 5 lunches each. So that makes 55 individual meals. So the total cost of those 5 days was $1.19 per person per meal. Not too bad but way off what we had done before. Now I will not add the weekend to this week. Not because we did not eat. LOL We partied like crazy. But the food was from so many people that I really can not calculate it. Saturday we fed 13+ people and Sunday it was 50+ people. I am sure you can understand. Dishes was brought from some, others added to the meat grilled and we pulled from our stock too.
For week 4 we will get back on track and do much better. But we had a great time splurging.

Thanks to garammasala for this picture.

So on to what our menus were:

Monday was Chicken Soft Tacos
Tuesday was Chicken Spaghetti
Wednesday Beef & Bean Chalupas
Thursday was left overs from all that Chicken Spaghetti we had made
Friday the households split. Lynette's had Fried Chicken take out and Nessa's had a 5 ft Subway Sandwich.

How did you do on your budget this last week?

Word-full Wed

Good Morning all!

THE FIRST PART OF THIS POST HAS BEEN REPOSTED ABOVE. THIS IS SO YOU WOULD NOT HAVE TO READ IT TWICE. HOPE IT DOES NOT CONFUSE TOO MANY?

What else, hummmm.....well I have been held up by toddlers. Yes those lovely 21 month old twins I watch daily. Seems that they have decided that naps are passe' so we are just not doing them. Of course no one alerted me of this trend. So for two days I have had to stay with them on the large front porch we have or in the "gated community" of the living room. Why? Because they know how to blitz a room in 30 seconds. So now I am doing my household chores at 4 am so I can be held hostage all day long. Oh well, it helps pay the bills!.

Oh bills, yes that one. Was paid for 3 months of child care this last weekend. I had to work up my budget for the next 5 months (won't be paid again til Feb 09). Spent time doing it. Have it down how to pay all the bills for next 5 months but very low on food budget as usual. Now you see why we are so inventive. But it feels good to say all of October bills are paid and some of November's are too already! So will bask in that glory and not worry past that.

How do you budget?

Tuesday Tidbits

Well I just finished up the totals on last weeks combined dinners with Nessa. And we came to a surprising cost of .20 per person/per meal. Under $20.00 spent for the week with our frugal "cents". Was that what you expected? See our blog on it here to read what we did.
Otherwise, I took Monday to relax while I watched the twins. Spent a lot of time just hanging in the living room with them while they played. Did some clean up of course, daily dishes and laundry. Had a lovely dinner with Nessa of home made chili from her crock pot recipes. Maybe she will share it with us? It was yummy. My Sunday was indulgent with me getting to rest and keep my knee put up. And it helped! The swelling is all gone now. I was also paid for my child care for the next 3 months. Which is really nice but that has to spread out for that and 2 more months after that. My "mom" that I do child care for is doing college this year and her payment is coming from her refund checks. So they are limited and come only once in a blue moon. So I am looking at my budget for the next 5 months and seeing how I can adjust to make it all work. Think I have it figured out for bills to be paid but holidays are going to be on the 100% cheap and frugal side. That really does not bother me. More worried about in law families and how to deal with our economy vs theirs. Well it will all fall into place as it should.

So tell me how are you looking at your budget with the upcoming holidays?

Bill Day

There are days and then there are days. Some of them you sail through and end up with a few things done and a feeling that life is good. Then the days you wade through the muck and mire. Where sounds are too loud, time is not stretched and energy has been sapped. My worse one every month is bill day. I have one check a month that I get to try and stretch to cover all the bills. Of course this is impossible. Next I get to lay out the monthly plan of when bills are due and where money is coming from. Of course I am always praying that it will drop from the sky. Bill day takes at least 3 hours without interruptions. Doing it with three 20 month old girls is a task one should not even contemplate. Thankfully about an hour into it my mom took the girls for nap time. Bill day makes me tired, worried and fearful. Here lately it has become harder and harder since I am now down to one permanent family for childcare income. I have cut as many bills as I possible can or so I think. I am actually looking at one more that I could trim if the family is willing to sacrifice. It will save another $15.00 from what we pay and still have a "luxury" item. And I see that in three more months I will have one bill paid off and that money can go to something else. Oh, bill day? Do you have one? How do you budget?
