Listening on the Road

I am so glad that Dear Hubby did the driving for our trip.  We went 1660 miles in 6 days.  That is quite a bit of traveling.  Actually is 31 hours of driving.  Some days we went over 400 miles and others less than 100.  It makes for some interesting conversations.  But there are those down times.  The map is the route we took for the complete vacation.

Now I could sit and read in the back seat.  But Dear Hubby did not have that option.  Granny M is not comfortable reading while riding either.  So we had a great alternative, books on CD.  Really is nice to hear a story read to us.  And with long roads in front of us it broke up the trip.  I promise you drive from Alamogordo, New Mexico to Post, Texas for a five hour trip you want to have something to take your mind away from the heat and desert.

For the first half of our trip to Pecos Texas we listened to Where We Belong by Emily Giffin read by Orlagh Cassidy.  The author of five blockbuster novels, Emily Giffin, delivers an unforgettable story of two women, the families that make them who they are, and the longing, loyalty and love that binds them together.  This was a well put together story line.  It was easy to follow along while listening to the story.  Often it makes a difference from reading a story to hearing a story.  I really loved listening to Granny M as she would pop off questions as to what was going to happen next.  Of course, we would just have to wait to see.  But it is great to see the excitement of an adventure being heard as we went on our own trip.

On the second half of our trip we listened to Shine Shine Shine by Lydia Netzer and read by Joshilyn Jackson.  This was great to also know that the music was composed by Lydia too.  What a talented woman.  We started this one right after we left White Sands New Mexico.  It was perfect coming from a place that made us feel like were on a different planet to a story that takes place on a mission trip to the moon.  Dealing with a genius husband and an autistic son has Sunny a lil on edge already.  Now that the trip is dealing with an accident it is getting worse.  I have to agree that the original music really did transpose us to another worldly experience.  I loved how the balance of their lives tumbles yet still comes together.

If you have to make a long trip, as many truck drivers already do, books on cd are really a God send.  They do not have to worry about reception from a radio station.  Nor will you find yourself nodding off to the drone of boring white noise.  Instead you can accomplish your trip while learning of other worlds in a book.  Thanks so to Macmillan Audio for helping us along on our trip too.

  1. We listened to a book on CD when I went on a trip with my Mom and two Aunts a few years ago and I finally had enough from my Mom and one Aunt and had to tell them to "PLEASE LISTEN TO THE STORY AND STOP ASKING QUESTIONS!! It got quite annoying. lol I love listening to books on CD when I am in the car.
