Breaking the Barrier

Yesterday was so nice.  I downloaded Black Wings on to my e-reader, poured my second cup of coffee and headed to the upstairs deck to rest and read.  I thought that looking out at the lake was the perfect place to read this story.  I have to say that this book facinated me.  Now as I have said before my Dear Hubby and his folks were all in the Navy.  So we have a special affection for that branch of the service.  Add in my love for a good mystery.  This is the perfect combination for Black Wings by Kathleen Toomey Jabs published by Fuze Publishing.

As I said yesterday, I have plenty of time to read while house sitting.  So I am devoring books right now.  I wish to thank Tribute Books for hosting this blog tour and including me in the ranks!  Now let's get down to the nitty gritty.  My mother-in-law was in the Navy back in the 1950's.  Women had very small roles then.  You could be a nurse or an office worker for the most part.  But she was an air traffic controler.  She eventually married my father in law who was a pilot and instructor.  In Black Wings we meet two women who are trying to break the barrier of men and women's roles.  Audrey Richards desire is to be a pilot.  Something that was not done just yet.  But she worked harder than all the rest to make her way into the seat of an airplane.  As you can guess some respected her for her dedication while others did their best to upset her plans.  When she dies in a unexplained plane crash her best friend and Navy roommate Bridget Donovan starts looking into what really happened to Audrey.  And there she finds out about Black Wings and the Hall of Shame.  Now of course from here you will have to read what happens.  I never give away the ending of a book!

Black Wings
LT Bridget Donovan suspects the worst when her former Naval Academy roommate, Audrey Richards, perishes in a botched take-off from an aircraft carrier. The Navy says it's an accident, but facts don't add up. Could it be suicide, or murder? Donovan's unofficial investigation into what really happened, both during their past Academy days and in Richards' final hours, forces her to examine the concepts of honor, justice and the role of loyalty in pursuit of those ideals.
